New infections continue to decline in India, in a sign of improving conditions, at a time when the country is weeks away from a vaccine.
India reported 26,382 new cases in a matter of 24 hours taking the total tally over 99.3 lakh in the world’s second-worst infected nation, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Dec. 16. That includes over 94.5 lakh recoveries and and more than 1.44 lakh deaths.
At over 33,000, daily recoveries continued to surpass new cases for over two weeks now. Active cases have fallen below the 3.4 lakh mark. As of Tuesday, over 95% of India’s confirmed coronavirus cases are now recovered. Active cases account for a mere 3.4% of the Covid pie.

The U.S. recorded a record number of coronavirus confirmed deaths at 3,721 on Wednesday so far, while the 7-day average is 2,550 and rising fast, according to Bloomberg data. Australia’s largest city Sydney is battling to prevent an outbreak of Covid-19 after five new cases in the past two days ended a more than month-long run with limited community transmission in New South Wales.
The European Commission is said to be pushing for expedited approvals of vaccines by Pfizer and BioNTech. Germany recorded its biggest increase in deaths since the pandemic began as Chancellor Angela Merkel hinted that a hard lockdown will remain in force longer than planned.
Globally, confirmed cases have topped the 74.1 million mark with 1.64 million dead.
